Choosing the target of a module or template style
Updated October 26, 2026
An import never uses the id an item had on the other site. Ids differ from site to site, so ConfigPort finds the target by what the item is.
How ConfigPort finds the target
| Kind | Matched by |
|---|---|
| Component | Its name, for example com_content |
| Plugin | Its group and name, for example system and cache |
| Module | Its module type and client, for example mod_custom on the site |
| Template style | Its template and client, for example cassiopeia on the site |
A component or a plugin exists once on a site, so it has one target or none.
A site can have many modules of one type and many styles of one template. When exactly one item on this site matches, ConfigPort selects it. When several match, you choose.
A module in the trash is never selected on its own. If it is the only match, the item waits in the Choose a target group until you choose it.
Choose a target
-
Open the item in the Choose a target group.
-
In Import into, pick the module or style that receives the settings. The list shows only modules of the same type and client, or styles of the same template and client, with their title, id and position. A module that is unpublished or in the trash says so, and so does the line Import into.

-
Click Check again.
The title and the position in the file are hints from the other site. They help you choose, but they never pick a target.
Two items for one target
Two items of the file cannot go to the same module or style. If they would, both items stay in the Choose a target group with a message. Choose another target for one of them, or tick Leave this item out for one of them.
This also happens when the file holds two modules of one type and this site has only one.
