Frequently asked questions
Updated October 26, 2026
Does ConfigPort copy articles, menus or users?
No. It copies settings only: component options, plugin settings, and the settings of modules and template styles that already exist on the target site. See What is transferred and what is not.
Can I move settings from Joomla 3 to Joomla 6?
Yes. Install ConfigPort on both sites, export on the Joomla 3 site and import the file on the Joomla 6 site. A file from Joomla 3 can be imported into Joomla 3, 4, 5 and 6. See Importing older Joomla exports.
Can I import a Joomla 6 file into Joomla 4?
You can preview it, not import it. A file from a newer Joomla major version than the site is preview only.
Does it work with third-party extensions?
Yes, when the extension keeps its settings where Joomla keeps them: the options of a component, and the settings of a plugin, module or template style. Settings an extension keeps in its own tables, such as the payment methods of a shop extension, are not transferred.
Are passwords and API keys exported?
Not unless you include them. ConfigPort leaves out values that look secret and lists them on the check page, where you can include each one. See Why some values are left out.
Will an import blank my passwords on the target site?
Not for a value the file left out. That setting keeps the value it has on the target site, with Merge and with Replace.
A value the file holds is written as it is, an empty one included. If you exported with Include from a site where a password is empty, the import empties that password on the target site. The preview hides both values, so check the source site before you include its secrets. The snapshot of the import lets you restore the old value.
Are permissions copied?
No. ConfigPort never exports or imports permissions.
What happens if I import the wrong file?
ConfigPort saves a snapshot before every import. Open Components → ConfigPort → Snapshots and restore it. See Reverting an import.
Can I see what will change before anything changes?
Yes. The preview shows every setting the import would add, change or remove, and the confirmation page lists every item that will change. Nothing changes before you click Apply the import.
Can I import into a module that has another title on the new site?
Yes. ConfigPort finds modules by their type and client, not by title or id. When several modules match, you choose the one that receives the settings. See Choosing the target of a module or template style.
Do I need JavaScript?
No. Every ConfigPort screen works without JavaScript. Without it, the Import button of an edit screen opens the import at once, without asking first. The ConfigPort options and permissions are on Joomla's own Options screen, which needs JavaScript to show its tabs.
Can an administrator who is not a Super User use ConfigPort?
Yes, when a Super User gives their group the permissions. See Permissions.
Where are snapshots and uploaded files kept?
In the site's database, not in files. Uninstalling ConfigPort deletes them.
Does ConfigPort send data anywhere?
No. It makes no network call. Joomla's own updater checks drplugin.com for new versions of the package.
Is PostgreSQL supported?
No. ConfigPort supports MySQL and MariaDB. The installer refuses a site on another database.
Which languages does ConfigPort come in?
English (en-GB).
Is ConfigPort free?
Yes. It is free to download and use, under the GNU General Public License version 2 or later.
