Quick actions on edit screens

Updated October 26, 2026

ConfigPort's system plugin, System - ConfigPort Quick Actions in the Plugins list, adds two buttons, Export and Import, to the toolbar of four core screens:

  • the Options screen of a component (Components → the component → Options, or System → Global Configuration and the component's tab);
  • the edit screen of a plugin;
  • the edit screen of a module;
  • the edit screen of a template style.

They work on Joomla 3.10 to 6, with or without JavaScript.

Who sees the buttons

A user sees Export when they can export settings, and Import when they can import settings. In both cases they must also be able to edit that item, and they need Access Administration Interface for ConfigPort. See Permissions.

The buttons show in the administrator only. The plugin adds nothing to the site and nothing to any other screen.

Export one item

Click Export. The browser downloads a file with the saved settings of this item, and the edit screen stays open. Changes you have not saved are not in the file, so save first if you need them.

The file leaves out values that look secret, as a full export does by default. To include them, or to leave out values that only make sense on this site, use Components → ConfigPort → Export instead. See Exporting settings.

Import into one item

Click Import. With JavaScript, ConfigPort asks first: "Import settings into this item? Unsaved changes on this screen will be lost." Without JavaScript the button opens the next step at once.

ConfigPort checks the item in, so the edit screen does not hold it, and opens its upload form. The form names the item that receives the settings.

Upload a .configport.json file. The preview takes only the settings for this item from the file. If the file holds several entries for it, for example two modules of the same type, choose the one to import. If it holds none, ConfigPort says so.

Check the preview and click Continue, then Apply the import.

After the import, the edit screen of the item opens again and loads the imported settings from the database. A message gives the number of the snapshot that ConfigPort saved first. A later Save on that screen keeps the imported settings, because the screen shows them.

Cancel, on the upload form or the preview, goes back to the edit screen without a change.

If another user is editing the item, ConfigPort doesn't import. It asks you to try again when they have closed it.

To undo the import, see Reverting an import.
